\u201cArtisan\u201d is the word that best describes Francesco Paolo Valentini, summarizing with absolute simplicity his relationship with the land, the vineyard and wine. This bond started in the mid-seventeenth century with his ancestors and has continued in his family for centuries to this day in the ancient village of Loreto Aprutino, in the province of Pescara. His father Edoardo, a leading figure in 20th century Italian enology and a man with a strong personality, taught and flanked Francesco from his early youth, handing down his same passion and respect for the vineyard and the surrounding environment. Francesco consults and compares the maniacally transcribed notes on climate change, dating back to the early 1900s, to produce and improve his wines: Trebbiano, Cerasuolo and Montepulciano.\u00a0These are put on the market only when he believes they are ready: in fact, the vintages are not always released in chronological order, as it happened with the 2011 Trebbiano released before the 2010 vintage, and sometimes they are not put on the market at all, as it happened with Cerasuolo. Valentini\u2019s Trebbiano has been recognised as one of the top 50 best wines in Italy. However, climate change is making it increasingly difficult to achieve such excellent results, especially without corrective measures either in the vineyard or in the cellar and by letting nature run its course. Indeed, this is what would fall perfectly in step with Valentini’s favourite line \u201cnatura non facit saltus\u201d (\u201cnature doesn’t leap\u201d) as the Latins who cultivated vines here used to say thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n
